At our clinic on Nassau Street, we do more than create a healthy smile. Our clinicians also offer a range of non-surgical facial treatments — anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and lip fillers — designed to work with the rest of your face rather than against it. Most appointments take under an hour, and you can return to your day straight afterwards.
Increasingly, patients who have finished orthodontic or cosmetic dental work with us want to complement the result. We assess your face as a whole, talk through what is realistic, and treat the areas that matter to you: wrinkles and frown lines, thinning lips, or lost volume around the cheeks and jaw. Every treatment starts with a consultation, and we will tell you honestly if we don’t think a treatment is right for you.
Anti-wrinkle injections soften the lines created by repeated facial movement — crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, frown lines between the brows, and the horizontal lines across the forehead. A very small amount of a purified protein is injected into specific muscles, relaxing them so the skin above creases less when you smile, squint or frown.
It helps to know which kind of line you’re dealing with. Dynamic lines appear when you move your face and are caused by muscle activity — these are what anti-wrinkle injections treat. Static lines are visible even when your face is at rest, and are caused by the gradual loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid as skin ages; sun exposure, stress and significant weight loss can all accelerate this. Static lines usually respond better to dermal fillers, and in some cases we’ll recommend a combination of the two. We’ll tell you which is likely to work for you at your consultation.
Anti-wrinkle treatment suits people who want a noticeable but restrained result rather than a surgical one. It won’t change the structure of your face, and done well, it shouldn’t look like you’ve had anything done at all.
Treatment begins with a consultation, where we look at how your face moves, discuss the result you’re after, and check that the treatment is appropriate for you. We’ll ask about your medical history, any medications you take, and whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as treatment isn’t suitable in that case.
The injections themselves take around 10 to 15 minutes. We use a very fine needle to place small amounts of the product into specific muscles, so most people describe the sensation as a brief sting rather than pain. The number of injections depends on how many areas you’re having treated.
You can go straight back to work or your other plans afterwards — there’s no recovery period. We’ll ask you to stay upright and avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. Some patients notice minor redness or small raised bumps at the injection sites, which usually settle within a few hours, and bruising is possible though not common.
Results begin to appear after two to three days and reach their full effect at around two weeks. We’ll see you for a review appointment at that point to check the result and make any small adjustments. The effect typically lasts three to four months, after which movement gradually returns and you can choose whether to repeat the treatment.
Most patients have one or two areas treated. If you’re unsure which is causing the effect you don’t like, bring it up at your consultation — it’s often not the area people expect.
Dermal fillers restore volume that the face loses with age. As skin matures it produces less collagen and elastin, and levels of hyaluronic acid — a substance the body makes naturally — decline. The result is thinner skin, deeper folds, and a flattening around the cheeks and jaw. Fillers are gels, mostly hyaluronic acid based, injected beneath the skin to replace that lost volume and support the tissue above.
This is where fillers differ from anti-wrinkle injections. Anti-wrinkle treatment relaxes the muscles that cause lines when you move. Fillers address the lines and hollows that are there whether you move or not, and they can also change contour — adding definition to a chin or jawline, lifting flattened cheeks, or softening the folds that run from nose to mouth. Many patients have both, treating different parts of the face.
Results are visible immediately and continue to settle over the following two weeks. How long they last depends on the product used and the area treated — generally six to eighteen months, with lips at the shorter end because the area moves constantly. We use premium hyaluronic acid fillers and will tell you which product we’re using and why.
Lip filler adds volume, corrects asymmetry and defines the border of the lips. It’s injected with a very fine needle into the lip and the surrounding area, and how much we use depends entirely on what you’re after — we treat a lot of patients who want their lips to look like their lips, only a little fuller.
Every mouth is different, and as a dental practice we look at your lips in the context of your teeth and smile line, which not every clinic does. At your consultation we’ll talk about what’s achievable for your anatomy, and we’d rather under-treat at the first appointment and add more than overfill.
Your first appointment is a consultation. We’ll go through your medical history, examine the area, discuss what you want to change, and agree a plan. If you’re happy to go ahead, we can usually treat you the same day.
We apply a topical numbing cream before we start, and the fillers we use contain a local anaesthetic. Lip treatment takes around 30 minutes; other areas are usually quicker. You’ll see the result immediately, though swelling means it won’t look final for a week or two.
You can go back to your normal day straight afterwards. Expect some swelling and tenderness, particularly with lips, and bruising is possible. We’ll give you written aftercare instructions and see you for a review.
Dermal filler treatments typically take between 30 – 45 minutes. In general, the results are are immediately noticeable, but will usually improve further over the following few weeks. Some patients may experience some temporary redness, swelling and sensitivity.
Depending on your skin and the area treated, the visible effects of dermal filler treatments can potentially last from 6 to 18 months.
