Fixed Metal Braces

If you’ve decided to have traditional braces, you are on your way to having a beautifully straight smile that can be maintained for life with the right care. Using advanced technologies and techniques, fixed metal braces consist of small metal brackets with a wire running through them. The ceramic braces do offer a more discreet alternative to their metal counterparts, as they are less noticeable. How To Look After Your Fixed Braces

For the first few days after your braces are fitted, your teeth may be sensitive, especially when pressure is applied. This is normal and will gradually improve, usually within 7 days. If necessary, simple painkillers such as Ibuprofen can help.

Initially, the braces may rub against your soft tissues, such as your lips or cheeks, and can cause ulcers or soreness lasting up to two weeks. Rinsing with warm salty water, or Kin Care mouthwash, can help to ease any discomfort. You can also use relief wax on your brace to protect your mouth during the first couple of weeks.

 

Caring for your teeth and gums is essential when wearing braces. Failure to maintain excellent oral hygiene could result in early termination of your orthodontic treatment to prevent long-lasting damage to your teeth or gums. If necessary we may refer you to our hygienist to help with oral care during orthodontic treatment.
